Vedārambha (वेदारम्भ) is the twelfth of the sixteen saṃskāras. The beginning of Vedic study proper.

Number12 of 16
Stage of lifeEducation
PerformedImmediately after upanayana
PurposeThe beginning of Vedic study proper.

What the rite is and why

Where upanayana admits the student, vedārambha begins the study itself: the first lesson of the Veda, taken with the teacher.

Some Gṛhya Sūtras treat this as part of upanayana rather than a separate saṃskāra, which is one reason different lists of sixteen differ slightly in their contents.

It marks the commencement of the daily discipline of recitation, which the student then keeps for years.

Where it stands today

Performed where traditional Vedic study continues; elsewhere absorbed into the upanayana ceremony.
