What the rite is and why

Vivāha is the pivot of the entire scheme: it begins the gṛhastha āśrama, which supports every other stage, and it kindles the domestic fire on which all later household rites are performed.

Its core elements are pāṇigrahaṇa (the taking of the hand), the seven steps around the fire (saptapadī) — after the seventh the marriage is complete and irrevocable — the vows spoken to each other, and the showing of Dhruva, the pole star, as the emblem of steadiness.

The saptapadī vows ask, in order, for food, strength, prosperity, happiness, progeny, the seasons in their due order, and lifelong friendship. The seventh is the decisive one: sakhā saptapadī bhava — 'with seven steps, become my friend'.

Marriage here is a saṃskāra, not a contract: it is a refinement performed on two people, whose stated aim is that together they may fulfil dharma, artha, kāma and finally mokṣa.

Where it stands today
