Tantra — what it actually is

तन्त्र

Also written: tantra · what is tantra · tantric practice · vamachara · kundalini tantra · तन्त्र

Tantra is a method, not a cult and not a sexual technique. The word comes from tan, to extend or weave — a system that extends, or a loom on which practice is woven. Tantric texts are technical manuals: mantra, yantra, ritual sequence, initiation, the subtle body, and the discipline by which a practitioner is transformed.

Its working premises

  • The body is the instrument of liberation, not the obstacle to it — the exact reversal of a purely ascetic reading.
  • The world is the Divine's own manifestation, so it is to be transformed rather than escaped.
  • What binds the ordinary person can liberate the prepared one, under a qualified teacher and within a defined discipline.
  • The macrocosm is present in the body: the cakras, the nāḍīs, the elements and the deities are all located within.
  • Initiation — dīkṣā — is required. The knowledge is transmitted, not read.

Its instruments

InstrumentFunction
MantraSound as the deity's own body; the mantra is not about the deity, it is the deity in sound
YantraThe same reality in geometry — a diagram that is simultaneously cosmos, body and path
NyāsaPlacing the mantra on the body point by point, so that the practitioner's body becomes the deity's
MudrāGesture and seal; also, in the internal sense, the states of consciousness they induce
Cakra and nāḍīThe subtle anatomy through which the awakened energy moves
DīkṣāInitiation, in which the teacher transmits what cannot be conveyed by instruction

Vāmācāra and dakṣiṇācāra

The 'left-hand' path uses transgressive substances and acts literally, within an initiated and closely governed circle, on the reasoning that what is renounced retains power over the renouncer. The 'right-hand' path performs the identical rite with substitutes or entirely internally. The overwhelming majority of tantric practice, historically and today, is the right-hand form. The popular Western equation of tantra with sexual practice takes one element of one restricted branch and treats it as the whole.
