The Sūtra literature

Sūtra means thread. A sūtra is a statement compressed to the point where it cannot be shortened without loss — designed to be memorised exactly and unpacked by a teacher. The form exists because the tradition was oral, and memory is expensive.
अल्पाक्षरमसन्दिग्धं सारवद्विश्वतोमुखम्। अस्तोभमनवद्यं च सूत्रं सूत्रविदो विदुः॥
alpākṣaram asandigdhaṁ sāravad viśvato-mukham astobham anavadyaṁ ca sūtraṁ sūtra-vido viduḥ
Few in syllables, unambiguous, full of essence, facing all directions, without padding and without fault — such is a sūtra, say those who know sūtras.
